During Ottoman rule, some Glozhene families were exempt from some taxes and obligations but had to perform several duties to the central government: to mow the sultan’s meadows, to take care of the sultan’s horses… The people of Glozhene with such a status were independent from the local spahi and could carry weapons. This is an essential reason for preserving the freedom-loving spirit of the people of Glozhene, which is also manifested in the mass participation in both the rebels and the national liberation struggles. The memory of the people of Glozhene has preserved the name of Nyagul the voivode. The area is named after him. There is a spring in this area, from which a fountain was later built. On the way to this remarkable natural site is another fountain, which tourists often mistakenly consider “Nyagulova Voda.” But this area is called “Stefanets” and is a much closer distance from the village.
